Set of six pillars. Carved wood, stone base. India, 19th century. A row of six carved wooden pillars, each topped with a capital and set in a carved stone base (these are grouped in pairs). The shafts feature three distinct sections (square, polygonal, and spiral) and relief decoration along their length, composed of plant motifs, lines, simple architectural elements, smooth areas, geometric shapes, and so on. The capitals, in their composition and decorative elements, bear a certain resemblance to Western classical forms. This type of architectural element was frequently used, for example, in havelis (traditional urban residences or mansions) in India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh, with the usual variations depending on the geographical area, period, and the owner's taste, but also in other prominent buildings.
