Louis XVI style oval coffee table. Mahogany wood and gilded bronze. Inspired by models by Adam Weisweiler, late 19th century. Coffee table with a straight board and oval shape with projections in the leg area, made of mahogany wood and enhanced with very good quality gilt bronze applications. The top board features simple geometric marquetry and a gilt bronze highlight on its edges. The legs have a curved shape on the outside enhanced by an appliqué in this same material with plant elements under a ram's head above and some plant elements at the end, both joined with a smooth band. The waist of the table shows very delicate scroll compositions with flowers, reclining rams, cornucopias and female heads on geometric marquetry like that of the tabletop (one of the fronts hides a drawer). To maintain the quality of the work, France was forced to maintain specialization in the different workshops. Thus, there were masters dedicated exclusively to creating elements in gilded bronze. It should be noted that those present appear on some similar tables, mainly preserved in private European collections. Adam Weisweiler (France, ca. 1750-after 1810) was a very prominent French cabinetmaker of the Louis XVI period who worked from 1778 (when he acquired the rank of master) for such prominent figures as Marie Antoinette, the future George IV , etc. When he retired, his son Jean Weisweiler continued with the workshop until 1844. Only a few private collections around the world preserve his work, in addition to institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York, or the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. His importance was so great that, even long after his death, other masters were inspired by his work to create numerous pieces.
