Christ with angels. Oil on copper, ebony frame, textile. Possibly Flemish school, 17th century. Oil painting on copper enhanced with a textile strip that also presents an ebony wood frame decorated with several smooth moldings and a flat area. The image presents Jesus, with a halo of light around his head, arranged as a bust, and with a choir of angels (full body and winged heads) with draperies moved by the wind (some naked) and a series of clouds. Iconographically, it is not the most common thing to see Jesus at an “intermediate age” (neither an adult nor a baby or a small child), the age range of the present image being characteristic of scenes such as Christ among the doctors, or representations of the Holy Family. . It is very common, since the Middle Ages, to accompany it with heavenly choirs of angels. Compare the work with an engraving by Gerard Edelinck, made in France between 1562 and 1707 (exemplary in the Rijkssmuseum in Amsterdam) that shows a medallion with Jesus, very similar to the one on this copper, flanked by angels and on some child figures in an attitude of dance.
