SILVER PIECE, VIRGIN OF THE ROSARY. SPANISH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY.

Antiques - Miscellaneus / Silver
Reference: ZF1536

Finial, Virgin of the Rosary. Silver. Spanish School, 17th century. Crafted in silver, this finial (for a reliquary, processional staff, etc.) depicts a Virgin Mary (standing on the head of a winged angel) holding the Christ Child, crowned and with Christ holding a rosary. Both are surrounded by a halo of flat rays of varying lengths, surmounted by a Latin cross. Within this halo, a composition of small beads alternating with much larger ones (another rosary) is clearly visible. This Marian devotion arose after the miraculous apparition of Mary to Saint Dominic in 1200, and has therefore been closely associated with the Dominicans from the beginning. Weight: 114 grams.
