Oriental wedding basket. Vegetable fiber, wood and metal. China, early 20th century. Wedding basket with two articulated compartments, constructed using basket weaving and reinforced with wooden slats and cut-out and openwork metal fittings. With a rectangular plan and a free-standing lid, it is decorated with applied metal rosettes and with careful calligraphy on one of the sides. This type of stacked baskets, articulated using a simple system of metal pins that can be removed to separate the different compartments, have been traditionally used in China and other Southeast Asian countries to contain gifts and small objects linked to the marriage ritual.
