Decorative Antiques - Paintings
Reference: Z5108
Pair of miniatures from the 19th century. “Portrait of a lady” and “Portrait of a gentleman.” With illegible signature. Carved and gilded wooden frames. Pair of miniature portraits, representing a lady and a gentleman from the 19th century, bordered by magnificent carved and gilded wooden frames, of baroque inspiration, based on curled acanthus leaves. Miniature painting, especially portraits, developed in Europe from the 16th century onwards. These were mainly paintings embedded in objects such as medallions, mantel clocks or small boxes. They were made in a wide variety of techniques, such as oil on copper, tin or ivory, washes on parchment or cardboard and, since the 18th century, watercolor on ivory. This delicate art was gradually lost in the second half of the 19th century, in parallel with the development of photography.
