Friar's chair. Carved wood, textile. Spain, 20th century. Also called an "armchair," this type of seat was very common in Spain despite its Italian origins. The style was introduced in the 16th century and remained a staple of Spanish furniture for centuries, becoming truly popular in the 19th and 20th centuries when pieces influenced by past styles came into fashion. It features a backrest and seat upholstered in red fabric with studs, and carved decorations on the arms, backrest, waist, and stretchers. It is reminiscent of notable examples such as several 19th-century pieces preserved in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid, etc. Several units available.
