Cockatoo. Framed watercolor. Twentieth century. Watercolor showing a cockatoo (possibly sulphurous) perched on a stone bench and picking up a cherry with one of its paws. Due to its detail and composition, the work is reminiscent of the 19th century engravings that appeared in zoology volumes (compare the work of Edward Lear, for example), although it is necessary to also cite the painting titled “Collection of Animals” by Melchior d'Hondecoeter (circa 1960) which is preserved in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Landscape. Oil on canvas. DEL VAL TROUILLHET, Mercedes (Valladolid, 1926-2012). Signed (lower right area). Mercedes del Val Trouillhet was a painter from Valladolid who began her training very young (first lessons at the age of seven, directed from Madrid by her teacher Timoteo Pérez Rubio). After the Civil War, he went on to study with the great cartoonist and poster designer José Picó Mitjans (1904-1991). From the beginning of his career he dealt with the theme of landscape, especially Castilian, and showed his work in several exhibitions (Valladolid in 1947, later Madrid, Córdoba, etc.). He also received several awards (Silver Medal at the XXIX Salon d'Automne in Madrid in 1957...) and his painting is preserved in several private collections and in institutions such as the Museum of the University of Valladolid.

“Northern European landscape with ruins”, in the style of the 17th century. Oil on panel. Beginning of the 20th century. Rural landscape with a watercourse, a stone bridge and a ruined house, located among trees, animated with the presence of a person and without an apparent theme that is inspired by baroque works from Northern Europe. Given the popularity they had at the time, this type of painting was taken up again in the 19th century, inspired by important Baroque works from both the Flemish and Dutch schools, and the detail of almost all the 16th century landscapes had already gone beyond presenting a historical or biblical matter (which on numerous occasions was minimized). Between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century, landscape painting became very popular in the Netherlands, with masters specializing in the genre proliferating.

Landscape. Painting on framed oval glass. XIX century. The landscape presents a lake or important watercourse, surrounded by high hills and forests, with houses, some ruins of a castle and several small, barely detailed characters animating and bringing life to the composition. Although it could recall in some details the oldest landscape tradition, in the treatment and other elements it is possible to link it with developments in 19th century painting.

“Gypsies.” Oil on canvas. Signed “A. Briones.” Twentieth century. Oil on canvas showing a natural landscape in the background, barely sketched, to leave prominence to the figures that are advancing in the foreground. The man, on the right, carries a cane on his shoulders and a series of items, in addition to being accompanied by a baby bear. In the center, a woman walks with a stick on her shoulder, leading a saddle loaded with more objects and some children by the reins. The painting shows a family of gypsies, on their way to some show in which they would use the baby bear. Between the 15th and 18th centuries the artistic image of gypsies is stereotyped and very scarce, with some engravings, tapestry and paintings such as “Landscape with gypsies” by David Teniers III from the Prado Museum (inv. Poo1818). The 19th century would be the moment of emergence of the gypsy motif in the plastic arts, due to the interest of foreign artists attracted by the “exotic” of these people, exposing what they considered their most folkloric features, especially highlighting works by Fortuny and Sorolla. This work aims to influence the particularities of the gypsy people, but without remaining only in their stereotypes, clearly showing the hardness of their life and the loneliness that it brought with it. Technically, one can appreciate its relationship with innovative contributions that have appeared in French painting since the end of the 19th century. Thematically, it is reminiscent of works of social realism (a pictorial movement that appeared in France around the mid-19th century).

“Boy and Rabbit”, after Sir Henry Raeburn RA (1756 - 1823). Colored artist's proof; Recorded. WILSON, Sydney Ernest (b. 1869- ca. 1963). Towards the beginning of the 20th century.

Gentleman. Oil on canvas. Dedicated, signed (F. Lloret.) and dated (1897) in the lower left corner. On an indeterminate background, the bust of the knight is placed, his face slightly turned to the right. In the lower left corner, the dedication appears (“To Porfirio / his friend”), the painter's signature and the date of completion of the work (“F/97”). As in the rest of Europe, portraiture was a genre that enjoyed great popularity in 19th century Spain, mainly thanks to social changes (rise of the upper bourgeoisie, etc.) that influenced aesthetics, hence the degree of intimacy that the painting gives off, different from the “official portraits” preferred by the nobility.

Framed miniature. The miniature represents a young woman conversing with a man of a certain age in a garden that is only alluded to by a flowering branch that could be an almond or cherry tree. The influence of the ancient Arab miniature in this work is clear, but there is also an idealization that can be related to the taste for the exotic that flooded art in the 19th century and was reflected in works with themes of landscapes and scenes considered typical of the Arab world in Europe.
