“Northern European Landscape with Ruins,” in the style of the 17th century. Oil on panel. Early 20th century. A rural landscape with a stream, a stone bridge, and a ruined house, nestled among trees, enlivened by the presence of a person, and lacking an apparent theme, is inspired by Baroque works from Northern Europe. Given their popularity at the time, this type of painting was revived from the 19th century onward, drawing inspiration from important Baroque works of both the Flemish and Dutch schools. This shift followed the trend of almost all 16th-century landscapes depicting a historical or biblical subject (which was often minimized). Between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, landscape painting gained immense popularity in the Netherlands, with a proliferation of masters specializing in the genre.
