Child Jesus enthroned. Wood, terracotta, fabric. Spanish school, 18th century and later (chair). The chair, with its oval, hollow back adorned with vegetal motifs tied in gold, features gently curved arms ending in prominent volutes at the front, and slightly curved legs that taper to a more pronounced shape at the bottom. The Christ Child, crafted from polychrome terracotta and secured to the chair by a vertical piece extending from the seat, is seated with his hands raised forward, his garments billowing in a breeze that the viewer cannot perceive. These garments are made of glued or plastered fabrics and polychromed. A small silver-plated halo rests on his head. The chair is reminiscent in some details of French Louis XVI-style "fauteuils," although it differs from the norm in other aspects, such as the absence of cabriole legs. Interestingly, a similar finish on the arms of this piece is found in the Virgin of Mercy, housed in the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville, attributed to José Montes de Oca and Jerónimo Hernández. A terracotta and wood figure of Saint Joachim with the Virgin Mary as a Child, signed by Pedro Gaitane (22 cm high, with chair and small stepped pedestal), is preserved with a composition similar to this Child. The figure of Jesus bears resemblance to the 18th-century Child Jesus of the Thorn in the Museum of the Holy Angel (Discalced Carmelites, Seville), considered a work by Cristóbal Ramos. Curiously, the Saint Joseph with Child in the Marroco Collection, also by Cristóbal Ramos, has arms turned in an outward spiral, although the backrest is completely different; compare the two Child figures. Another name worth mentioning, due to certain similarities, is that of the sculptor Torcuato Ruiz del Peral.
