Frances Isabelle (Lockwood) Brundage (United States of America, 1854-1937) was a highly regarded illustrator known for her charming children's illustrations on postcards, Valentine's Day cards, calendars, and other items published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Samuel Gabriel Company, and Saalfield Publishing. She also illustrated several children's classics, including novels by Louisa May Alcott and Johanna Spyri, and the story of Robin Hood. Plants; Helleboraster maximus, etc. Colored engraving, framed. 20th century, inspired by BESLER, Basilius (1561-1629). This hand-colored and framed engraving depicts a central plant flanked by two smaller ones. The names of all three are in Latin below them, with the central plant, Helleboraster maximus (named Helleborus foetidus by Linnaeus in 1753), being the most prominent. Helleboraster maximus is a genus of flowering plants in the Ranunculaceae family, and one of its varieties is known as the Christmas rose. The illustration is inspired by one from the work "Hortus Eustettensis" by Basilius Besler (1561-1629), a respected German physician, pharmacist, and botanist from Nuremberg.
