The sextant is an instrument that allows measuring angles between two objects such as two points on a coast or a star, traditionally the Earth's Sun and the horizon. Knowing the elevation of the Sun and the time of day, the latitude at which the observer is located can be determined. This determination is made quite precisely through mathematical calculations that are easy to apply. This instrument, which replaced the astrolabe due to its greater precision, has been of great importance in maritime navigation for several centuries, including in aerial navigation as well, until in the last decades of the 20th century, more modern systems were imposed, above all, position determination using satellites. The name sextant comes from the scale of the instrument, which covers an angle of 60 degrees, that is, one sixth of a complete circle. Decorative item.
