Handmade basket. Plant fiber and lacquered wood. China, circa early 20th century. A flattened, ovoid-shaped Chinese basket that combines meticulous and intricate basketry work in the body, lid, opening, handles, and base, all in lacquered wood. The tondo atop the lid depicts a figurative scene in a style derived from contemporary ink painting, with precise gold brushstrokes on a black background, red details, and the face highlighted in a soft ochre tone. It shows a richly attired lady in a landscape setting, seated before a stream from which she gathers a veil.
