Flotte d'Otahiti assembled in Oparee. Colored engraving. Robert Bénard (active 1750-1785), 1778. Hand-colored engraving from the series “The Voyages of Captain Cook”, which makes number 34 of said series (“Voyage das L'Hemisphere Austral, et author du Monde, fait sur les Vaisseaux de Roi, L, Aventure & la Resolution…” Written by Jacques Cook, Commedant de la Resolution…1778 Volume II, plate 34), and was made by Robert Bénard (active 1750-1785), who was the first to make engravings based on the diagrams, drawings and paintings of places that William Hodges visited while accompanying Cook on his second voyage (1772-1775).
