Mirror. Carved and gilded wood. Spain, 19th century. Rectangular wall mirror with a carved and gilded wooden frame, featuring openwork in some areas. It has a crest at the top, decorated with architectural and vegetal motifs (garlands of flowers, leaves, etc.) arranged symmetrically around a curved form reminiscent of 18th-century Rococo rocaille. Note also the undulating edges of the frame in this area. Beyond the usual composition of plain moldings, a series of vegetal and architectural motifs (volutes, leaves, scrolls, etc.) are displayed, with some details again showing a certain Rococo influence. The piece shows a clear influence of 18th-century Rococo works, as already mentioned, but with a layout more typical of 19th-century pieces. Furthermore, a clear French influence can be noted (in this school, we would speak of the Louis XV style). Compare, for example, with several mirrors in the Cerralbo Museum in Madrid, where the upper part displays gentle curves (inv. 04166) – dated to the second half of the 19th century.
