Saint Anthony, reading before the gates of a city. Engraving. DÜRER, Albrecht (Nuremberg, 1471-1528). Later edition, possibly 19th century. Signed and dated on the plate. This engraving depicts the hermit saint with his usual attributes (staff with a cross, bell, hooded habit, etc.) seated, engrossed in his reading, with an imaginary city in the background. Towards the bottom of the print, one can see both Dürer's monogram and the date of the first edition of this engraving (1519). Multiple editions of this same print were produced, primarily during the 18th and 19th centuries, including some in the 20th century.
