CARTEL CLOCK. BRONZE. FRANCE, 19TH CENTURY.

Antiques - Miscellaneus / Clocks
Reference: ZF1411

Wall clock/sign. Gilt bronze. France, 19th century. A gilt bronze wall clock of the type known as a "cartel" due to its shape, featuring a Parisian movement and a white dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals every five minutes. Around a body with openwork panels, it displays a decoration of garlands originating from ribbons and architectural and vegetal elements of a distinctly classical style, an influence also present in the upper finial in the form of a vase and in the lower grotesque mask situated above a vegetal motif. This is a fairly popular model within the French school, as similar boxes are known in private collections dating from the last third of the 18th century. The main differences lie in the shape of the finial vase and the front garlands in later known examples (made both in the first half of the 19th century and during the reign of Napoleon III). Weight: 9 kg.
