"Thousand-faced" fan in a fan case. Paper, lacquered wood, wood and glass… Canton, China, late Qing dynasty (1644-1912). It has faults. A fan case containing a paper fan decorated with a painting depicting a courtly scene with richly attired oriental figures, framed by a border with architectural elements and other objects. The sticks, made of lacquered wood with gilt details, feature floral motifs and, again, another courtly garden scene with pavilions and figures. These types of fans were made in China for export to Europe and were very popular during the 19th century.
