Mahogany wood display cabinet in the Louis XV style, 19th century. A three-door glass-fronted display cabinet rests on cabriole legs with outward-facing scrolls and a stopper. The doors lock and feature panels with paintings and moldings combined with frieze in a lighter wood. The entire surface of the cabinet is decorated with plant motifs, and a cherub's head crowns the central section, which is wider and taller than the sides. The vegetal motifs that decorate the entire surface of the display case, focusing on the top and bottom edges, reflect the characteristics of the Rococo style. The curved forms of these rocaille motifs stand out, extending onto the cabinet doors to add movement, combining asymmetrical and symmetrical elements. The only decorative fittings are the lock shields on the three doors and the hinges, all in gilt metal. While French furniture typically incorporates other decorative elements in bronze, it's not uncommon to find examples where the only decoration is carved wood and some frieze work. Here, a perfect union between structure and decoration is evident. The painted scenes decorating the side doors depict children and a harp on one, and a woman with Cupid on the other. Technically, they resemble plaques made with the so-called "Vernis Martin" glaze commonly applied to furniture at the time. They feature inconsequential themes, appropriate for interior decoration, and perfectly fulfilled their role of adding delicacy and color to the furniture. Furthermore, they can be classified within the Gallant Painting style, characteristic of the Rococo period. All the decorative elements of the piece of furniture are in the Rococo style, also known as Louis XV (1710-1774), as these styles were adopted in France during his reign. In the 19th century, as with other styles, numerous pieces were created taking inspiration from 18th-century designs and incorporating a number of distinctive features of the period, such as, in this case, the abundance of decorative moldings with rocaille motifs and the striking movement of the lines that define the upper and lower sections of the display cabinet.
