Saint Christopher. Jet. Spanish School, 16th century.
A carving showing a male figure standing on a base and carrying a child on his shoulders. Saint Christopher of Lycia, best known thanks to the spread of the Golden Legend by James of the Voragine from the 13th century onwards, was best known for having crossed a river with Christ disguised as a child on his shoulders. Compare this work with the 16th-century jet-carved Saint James with Pilgrims in the Cathedral Museum of Ávila (Spain), the examples in the Valencia Museum of Don Juan (Madrid), etc."
