GLASS CAMEO, URANIA.POSSIBLY ITALY, 19TH CENTURY.

Decorative Antiques - Miscellaneus

Cameo or intaglio, Urania. Glass. Possibly Italy, 19th century. The semi-nude female figure seated and holding a sphere is often associated with Urania, the Muse of Astronomy and Astrology. Compare this piece with the intaglio by Giovanni Pilcher, also considered to represent this muse, created before 1791 and now in the British Museum in London. These types of pieces were produced in significant numbers, as they were highly valued as souvenirs by Grand Tour travelers, who often acquired several to form collections.
