Baton of command for Evaristo Martín Freire with case. Tortoiseshell, gold, metal, etc. Spain, mid-20th century. Case or box lined inside with closures on the front and a plaque on the top with the legend “The Province of Las Palmas / Grateful For The Most Meritorious Work / Carried Out By The Most Excellent Mr./ DON EVARISTO MARTIN FREIRE / During His Command As Civil Governor Of The Same / Is Honored To Offer Him This Symbol / Of An Authority Exercised With Dignity / Brilliance and Efficiency”. Evaristo Martín Freire (Piedrabuena, Ciudad Real, 1904–Madrid, 1972) was a Spanish politician from a family of large landowners and ranchers, as well as mayors. He studied Pharmacy at the Central University of Madrid. In 1931, he joined the Spanish Agrarian Party, later enlisting as a volunteer in Francisco Franco's army. After the war, he returned to Ciudad Real, where he joined the provincial leadership of the Falange Española. He was appointed Civil Governor of Las Palmas in 1951, a post he left when he was appointed Civil Governor of the province of Alicante in 1954. The ceremonial staff, of civilian origin, consists of a wooden shaft covered with tortoiseshell, a metal ferrule, and a handle with Evaristo's initials intertwined in colored enamels and two heraldic shields on the front (both representing Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) with vegetal and other motifs. It is topped with a band of vegetal motifs and gems and another band of gems above a laurel wreath as a lower finial. No hallmarks are visible on the metal.
