Centerpiece. Gilt bronze, marble. France, late 19th century A centerpiece or planter featuring a globular body carved from veined marble in pink tones (similar to a type often used in French Rococo works of the 18th century) and mercury-gilded marble accents. These are decorated with lion's claws on the feet, simple architectural moldings, and mascarons with alternating vegetal and monstrous elements. A rim extends inward, creating two wings or handles decorated with vegetal and architectural motifs (volutes, flowers, ribbons, leaves, etc.) both inside and out, leaving the inner surface of the marble smooth. The classical inspiration of the couple's decorative elements is common in French school works dating back to the 18th century. Some details (for example, the claw-like finials on the legs) are seen in Louis XIV-style centerpieces from that century, while other elements are more frequently found in Louis XVI-style works (one of the main styles of Neoclassicism). Only one piece is known to exist, held in a private collection in the United States. Weight: 16 kg
