Study. Drawing on framed paper. After VON MENZEL, Adolph. 20th century. Inscription (lower left area). Study inspired (as indicated by the handwritten text in the lower left area, “d'après Menzel”) by a work by Adolph Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel (Breslava, 1815-Berlin, 1905) made for “The Broken Jug” (Der zerbrochene Krug), a deluxe edition by the publishing house A. Hoffmann & Co. of Berlin made to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Heinrich von Kleist in 1877. Knighted in 1898, the man formerly known as Adolph Menzel was a German painter known for his works on historical themes and for being the main representative of 19th-century German pictorial realism.
