Empire-style ceiling lamp. Bronze and glass. 19th century. Chandelier or ceiling lamp made of gilt bronze and decorated with elements of strong classicist influence (garlands of leaves, Greek-style palms, plant elements, scrolls, etc.) and with beads of various shapes made of transparent glass (faceted chains, others in the shape of a teardrop, etc.). Compositionally, it follows common models from several 19th-century European schools, with these decorative elements being what could place it within the French school. The Empire style is a dominant (but not exclusive) current within Neoclassicism that emerged primarily during the First French Empire and was characterized by its influence from ancient models, but with an extravagance unlike that of the 18th century, and reminiscent of the Louis XIV style in some details.
