Pietà, devotional plaque. Bronze. Spanish School, 17th century, based on the model of Guglielmo DELLA PORTA. Oval-shaped devotional plaque made of bronze, featuring a ring at the top and a molded frame with an interior line of stripes surrounding a figurative religious scene. This depicts Mary holding the body of Christ after his death (Pietà), following a model attributed to Guglielmo della Porta (1515-1577). Compare this with the gilt bronze relief in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, attributed to Jacob Cornelis Cobaert, who was in turn inspired by a design linked to Guglielmo della Porta and believed to have been executed in Rome around 1569. This type of devotional plaque was very common in the Spanish school.
