The Fountain. Polychrome terracotta. 20th century, following models by CARRIER-BELLEUSE, Albert-Ernest (Aisne, 1824-Sèvres, 1887). The figure shows a child, lying down and almost completely naked, with his head highlighted by a crown of gold leaves. He is shown with a shell (with touches of gold), taking water from a jug at his side, thus recalling the allegories of rivers or their sources in Ancient Rome. It is necessary to compare this work with the one entitled “La Source” by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, preserved, for example, in the Art Institute of Chicago or the one in the Portland Museum of Art (of which there are a number of variants, changing the characters and the material used). Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was a French sculptor and draughtsman who trained with David d'Angers and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He achieved international recognition after his participation in the Salon des Artistes Françaises in 1861 (Third Medal), producing notable works such as several busts of Napoleon III, the fireplace in the great hall of the Paris Opera, etc. His work is preserved in prominent private collections and in institutions such as the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Museo del Prado in Madrid, etc. In addition, we must remember his terracottas and his monuments (such as that of Bernardo O'Higgins in Santiago de Chile). It is also worth highlighting the publication in 1884 of L\\'application de la figure humaine à la decoration et à l\\'ornementation industrielles, an important collection of decorative arts of the time, and in 1876 he was appointed art director of the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres.

Sculpture in corrugated iron. Signed “Aug. Moreau”. Following models by Auguste Moreau, France, 19th century. It is reminiscent of works such as the bronze “The Fountain” by Mathurin Moreau, and pieces by Hyppolyte Moreau and Auguste Moreau (France, 1834 – 1917). Auguste began his training as a disciple of his older brother Mathurin. He made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1861, where he participated regularly until 1913. He was also a member of the Société des Artistes Français. His themes – genre scenes, pastorals, allegorical – and his realistic and graceful style link him with other members of the Moreau dynasty, known for their small bronze works that were widely reproduced and inspired many other masters, both during the artists’ lifetime and after their death.

Classic corbel in marble dust. Under a simple moulding, a scroll with an open centre has been placed, revealing a curved shape in another colour whose lines it follows. This two-colour scheme can be seen in other architectural details of the corbel, such as the oval shield with scrolls in the lower area, or the three drops in the centre. Although the inspiration in elements from Antiquity is clear, these have been used freely, giving rise to a highly original work of art.

Writing desk. Bronze. 19th century. The four containers that make up the writing case are placed on a tray with curved profiles decorated with mouldings and scallops on its edges. The sandbox or sandpit, the feather duster and the inkwell have clear lines and smooth areas, combined with fine mouldings resembling a cord; the oval box with a lid finished in a knob has smooth mouldings on its entire outer surface. Although certain details (particularly the tray) could be reminiscent of certain Rococo works of the 18th century, the toned down movement of the tray, the decoration of the containers, the lines and the lack of prominent decorative elements would be more characteristic of the Neoclassicism of the 18th and 19th centuries, as is the inspiration in styles of the past and the combination of various currents in the same piece.

Collection of engravings by Gustave Doré (1832-1883). “Madrid, Engravings by Gustave Doré”. Special edition directed by Antonio de Horna. Madrid, Culture and Art Collection, De Horna Editores. Compilation of engravings directed by Antonio de Horna made by Gustave Doré, a great draughtsman and engraver known, above all, for his work for an edition of “Don Quixote”, published in London in 1880, which was very well received by the public. Successful in France, he moved to live in England, where he was even more appreciated for his visions of the Victorian costumbrista environment of the mid-nineteenth century. Antonio de Horna, in this same book, accompanies a brief biography of the author with the intention behind this collection: “his true glory… would come to him… when his indisputable genius was recognized, captured in more than ten thousand drawings and engravings.”

Fireplace plate with Picador. Cast iron. Spain, early 20th century. Cast iron fireplace backsplash with a rectangular shape and decorated with reliefs on the front. The upper part features a composition of leaves flanking a plain shield, and is extended along the sides and bottom by a series of lines and more leaves with a classicist influence in the corners. The front shows a figurative bullfighting scene, with a picador (or garrochista or varilarguero) spearing a bull, which charges the horse that the rider is riding. This type of piece was already used in the Gothic period, and outstanding examples have been preserved, such as the one on the Imperial coat of arms of Charles V (dated to the 16th century; Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid), for example. Although some experts consider the heraldry to be the most unusual decoration on these objects, we have also seen pieces with mythological or pastoral scenes, architectural elements, religious motifs, etc. In addition to presenting an interesting decoration due to its historical value in the study of bullfighting, it is worth highlighting the quality and depth of the reliefs it displays.
