SET OF TWO ORIENTAL APOTHECARY CABINETS. WOOD, METAL. POSSIBLY CHINA, ...

Pair of oriental pharmacy furniture. Carved and polychrome wood. Possibly China, 19th century. Both are practically identical, with an upper space enhanced by simple geometric openwork compositions and a railing in the lower area; the body has a series of small drawers with handles (forty-two in total), and three wider ones below; the lower area shows two carved plant elements. This type of furniture was used (and is still used today) in pharmacies and Chinese medicine establishments of some importance.

Oriental cabinet. Carved and polychrome wood, metal. Towards the beginning of the 20th century. Tall cabinet made of carved wood, with metal fittings, with a decoration of a certain oriental influence. At the top it has two doors in the centre and two smaller ones on the sides, these located above two covered spaces that give access to two shelves. Under these central doors there is another covered space. Towards the bottom, there are four drawers and, in the lower area, another central space. All these accesses have doors decorated with carved scenes of Chinese influence.

Oriental ticket office. Carved and polychrome wood. 19th-20th centuries. A four-legged table with a rectangular top that protrudes slightly from the body of the piece and a not too pronounced carved front, clearly distinguishing each of the five drawers it has. Both the decorative motifs, the colour combination and the appearance (with areas that appear to be lacquered) follow ancient Chinese examples, but it is also possible to appreciate particular differences with what is usual in 19th century Chinese furniture in the West (proportions, combination of decorative techniques).

A piece of furniture with a rectangular, straight top decorated on the sides with geometric elements and on the front with an elaborate carving of plant elements highlighting the ovals present in its five drawers, in which floral compositions and figurative scenes can be seen on a black background. Both in its shape and in this decoration, the relationship of the piece with ancient Chinese furniture is clear.

Oriental furniture. Carved and polychrome wood, metal. Early 20th century. A carved, polychrome and gilded wooden cabinet with three upper compartments, one of which is the same length as the other, located just above two doors that give access to two shelves. The carved decoration based on geometric and plant elements, as well as the arrangement of the compartments, drawers and fittings, show a strong influence from ancient Chinese models.

Oriental ticket office. Carved wood, metal. 19th century. Wooden cabinet on legs (the front ones carved) with two doors at the front with metal handles and decoration based on squares combined with two panels of simple geometric openwork motifs that have been highlighted with a gilding that is largely preserved. Both the shape and the aesthetics of the piece of furniture are common in oriental pieces, with a strong Chinese influence.

ORIENTAL TABLE 19TH CENTURY

19th century Chinese table. Wood, with carved and lacquered details. An oriental table with a square top, slightly overhanging and supported by corbels at the corners, carved in the shape of cloud scrolls. It stands on four simple circular legs, typical of traditional Chinese furniture, joined by an openwork waist, with a recessed profile, which is decorated with central plates with figurative reliefs and phoenix figures also in relief, on an openwork background, in the corners. In the secondary areas we can see motifs of scrolls, flowers and insects. All the carvings appear decorated with lacquer. The figurative scenes represent dynamic and narrative scenes, set in the ancient imperial court.

Oriental sideboard. Carved wood, metal. 20th century. Rectangular sideboard with a smooth top and a visual division at the front into two levels: three drawers in the upper one, decorated with carvings of facing dragons; four drawers on either side of two central doors (a total of eleven drawers and two doors), with the fronts enhanced with simple lines. This door gives access to two shelves. The influence of ancient Chinese examples is clear both in the decoration and in the arrangement of the elements of the furniture.

Chest of drawers. Carved wood, metal. 20th century. Chest of drawers with a rectangular top decorated with lines below it and with simple lines on the doors and drawers. The arrangement of these elements (three drawers on the top, two doors in the centre below and two small drawers flanking these) is reminiscent of certain pieces of furniture of Chinese origin made in the 19th century and imported to Europe due to the taste of the upper classes for these exotic pieces.

19th century Chinese console. Painted wood. Traditional style Chinese console table with a very high rectangular top, supported by corbels cut in the shape of cloud scrolls, inspired by those in architecture. It stands on four simple legs, and under the top there are two registers of drawers, three below and two above, larger, with a smooth front and the shelves highlighted by mouldings. Below the drawers we see a decorative panel with side scrolls similar to the corbels.

ORIENTAL RICE POT. WOOD AND METAL. CHINA, CA. EARLY 20TH CENTURY.

Oriental rice container. Wood and metal. China, early 20th century. Chinese rice storage container, made of carved and varnished wood in a reddish tone, with a flattened ovoid body and a flat lid, slightly raised towards the centre. The shoulders are clearly differentiated by an edge enhanced by the application of a metal moulding, similar to that which outlines the foot. Below the shoulders, on both sides, there are two metal handles in the form of an arch, with floral design fasteners. The lid is decorated with a central roundel of wood carved in lowered relief, combining an exterior border of geometric clouds with a double interior profile of mitered curves. In the centre, a small flattened knob with a flower at the base, matching the fasteners of the handles.

Oriental wedding basket. Plant fibre, wood and metal. China, early 20th century. Wedding basket with two articulated compartments, constructed using basketry and reinforced with wooden slats and cut-out, openwork metal fittings. Rectangular in shape and with a free-standing lid, it is decorated with applied metal rosettes and with careful calligraphy on one of the sides. This type of stacked basket, articulated by a simple system of metal pins that can be removed to separate the different compartments, has traditionally been used in China and other Southeast Asian countries to contain gifts and small objects linked to the wedding ritual.
