Reference: Z2330
Cylindrical box for “turner’s test”, 17th-18th century. A cylindrical box decorated with various bands and a lid with a carved star. The base bears a series of inscriptions that allude to its purpose: these types of pieces served as demonstrations of mastery by apprentice woodturners, required to pass certain examinations within their guild. Few of these works survive because they were more practical than decorative and were not commissioned by a client, but their significance is undeniable for this very reason.
