Antiques - Miscellaneus / Silver
Reference: ZF1319

Sugar box. Silver in its natural color. Northern Europe (possibly Berlin), circa first half of the 19th century. With contrast markings. A rectangular box with chamfered corners rests on four claws with prongs and features a lid with a central projection and a plaque with engraved initials. On the exterior, a frieze of vegetal motifs adorns the keyhole. A sugar box in a private European collection is known to bear a hallmark similar to this piece (the initial A in a circle). This particular sugar box is a Neoclassical work from Berlin, the work of Gottlob Ludwig Howalt, and dated around 1820. This type of lockable sugar box was common in certain areas of Northern Europe, acquiring a similar appearance to this piece following Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion, which spread French aesthetic styles.
