Reference: ZF1547
Shepherd's box. Antler, wood, metal. Spain, 1788. It has faults. A flat-lidded box with a circular base, made of carved horn and decorated on the exterior with reliefs. The sides feature a band of geometric elements, and the date 1788 is inscribed on the front (the year it may have been made). The lid displays a crowned shield flanked by vegetal motifs and framed by a band of simple geometric elements, quartered with castles and rampant lions, in the traditional style of the Castilian coat of arms used by its monarchs since 1230. These types of snuffboxes or tobacco boxes are called pastoral because of the material they are made of: horn, usually cow horn, carved, with metal elements (iron nails, hinges, etc.) and some wooden additions (especially on the lid). The decoration is very varied, always following folk styles and often featuring motifs with long traditions, where it is not uncommon to find dates or the name of its former owner.
