Two-leaf door with castanet frame. Pine wood. Spain, 17th century. Double-leaf door made of pine wood decorated with rectangular panels arranged in rows and a castanet-type frame (named after the elements that decorate it). Although panels were a common element in the Renaissance, they continued to be used in this period and long after.

Wall clock. Metal, wood. United States of America, patented 1874. American wall clock with a wooden and metal case, 8-day and 30-hour model, featuring a white dial with Roman numerals for the hours and lines for the minutes, and a landscape with architecture with a certain colonial air in a natural setting. Along with the usual influence or reminder of English models, a series of more particular details of the continent and the area can be seen.

Brazier box. Carved walnut wood. 18th century. A polygonal box decorated with smooth mouldings on the outer edge, made to contain a metal piece that would serve as a brazier to heat a room. The clean lines and mouldings are common details of 18th century neoclassical art, decorative elements present in antique pieces even though they had a more utilitarian than decorative purpose.

Pair of carved wooden chair frames decorated with turned balustrades on part of the backrests (which have two smooth crossbars, leaving the rest openwork), legs and jambs, thus inspired by old models common in traditional furniture and thus following a common trend at the time.

Sculpture in corrugated iron. Signed “Aug. Moreau”. Following models by Auguste Moreau, France, 19th century. It is reminiscent of works such as the bronze “The Fountain” by Mathurin Moreau, and pieces by Hyppolyte Moreau and Auguste Moreau (France, 1834 – 1917). Auguste began his training as a disciple of his older brother Mathurin. He made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1861, where he participated regularly until 1913. He was also a member of the Société des Artistes Français. His themes – genre scenes, pastorals, allegorical – and his realistic and graceful style link him with other members of the Moreau dynasty, known for their small bronze works that were widely reproduced and inspired many other masters, both during the artists’ lifetime and after their death.

Chapel. Mahogany wood. 18th century. Broken glass. Chapel for a private oratory made of mahogany wood, with a space protected by a sheet of transparent glass (locked with a key) to place a sculpture. The decoration and lines of the piece (straight mouldings, columns with entasis and simple capitals, setback of the central part on the floor plan, etc.) respond to classicist influences, a common inspiration in 18th century art.

Entredos. Ebonized wood, bronze, marble. France, 19th century. Narrow chest of drawers known as “entredós” made of ebonized wood with bronze applications on the chamfered sides and on the front, which has a top in light marble. The neoclassical influence can be appreciated both in the purity of the lines and in the metal appliqués (plant elements, scrolls, architectural motifs… of classical influence).

Incense burner. Bronze. 19th century. Bronze censer with a circular base and cup-shaped lid with elaborate lines and simple openwork elements, inspired by antique pieces. It has metal chains that connect it to the usual piece with a ring. Certain lines and decorative motifs are reminiscent of some Spanish works from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Fifteen balusters. Bronze and wood. 18th century. Grouped in sevens, the bronze balusters are placed between two straight painted wooden crossbars, thus highlighting the curved lines, discs and other shapes of the elements discussed. This type of piece was very common in Neoclassicism (as well as in other periods) to decorate a railing, a staircase, etc.

Pair of cupboard doors with latch. Walnut wood, iron. 18th century. Pair of carved walnut doors decorated with panels flanked by flat areas, which have a wrought iron latch and a lock with key (whose shield shows curved lines clearly reminiscent of the Baroque) and parts of the hinges that would have joined it to the cupboard for which they were created. Both the wood and the decoration (on the doors and the latch) show influences of Baroque models, as was common in certain Spanish centres of the 18th century.

Monk's armchair. Carved wood, textile. Spain, 20th century. Also called an “armchair”, this type of seat was very common in Spain despite its Italian origin. The typology was introduced in the 16th century, and remained a common feature of Spanish furniture during the following centuries, becoming really popular in the 19th and 20th centuries when pieces influenced by past styles became fashionable. It has a backrest and seat upholstered in red fabric, with studs, and carved decorations on the arms, backrest, waist and jambs. It is reminiscent of outstanding examples such as several from the 19th century preserved in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid, etc. Several units available.

It has a metal handle with curved lines of different widths. Stylistically, it is possible to appreciate the purity of lines that is common in Neoclassical works, despite the fact that this type of piece is very old.

Mirror. Silver-plated metal, glass. Circa 1900. Rectangular mirror with a pointed top decorated with a frame that features a band of pearls on the inside and smooth areas highlighted with rectangular elements that have plant motifs on the inside; the wider base features a kneeling lady inside a garland of flowers that extends to the sides of the piece in abundant bouquets. The curved lines and the prominence of the female figure are two details that link the mirror with Modernism.

Pair of chairs. Ebonized pear wood, textile. France, 19th century. Pair of chairs made of carved, turned and ebonised pear wood with a high openwork back decorated with balustrade shapes. These lines are repeated in the legs (curved outwards), which have been secured by means of jambs. The back and front of the chairs have also been decorated with a series of simplified lines and plant elements, in keeping with neoclassical taste.
