Advertising poster, Café La Estrella. Cardboard. Spain, circa early 20th century. It has faults. Advertising poster for a well-known coffee brand, La Estrella, with a curious slogan referring to its aroma. La Estrella was founded in 1887 in Badajoz by José Gómez Tejedor, who obtained the patent for roasted coffee in Spain in 1901. He developed and registered a Cuban trick used by miners: wrapping coffee beans in sugar to preserve them. His technique of fixing the aroma during roasting transformed coffee consumption, as previously the aroma could not be preserved and coffee had to be roasted in the same place where it was consumed.

Bronze peace bearer. The plaque that forms this element, used in ancient times in mass to give the kiss of peace with decorum, has been decorated with various reliefs: in the lower part, vegetal scrolls, vine leaves, bunches of grapes and ears of wheat, in clear allusion to the Eucharist; a semicircular arch under a palm-shaped finial highlighted with scrolls; and, in the centre, a relief of the Deesis: Christ on the Cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist. The decorative motifs of this work, like the figures, show a clear influence from classical antiquity.

Devotional plaque, Saint Peter in tears. Bronze. Spanish school, 19th century. Devotional plaque made of bronze with a rectangular shape that has a washer at the top and a frame of smooth mouldings around a figurative relief. It shows a Christian theme known as “Saint Peter in tears” or “The repentance of Saint Peter”, being the moment in which the Apostle laments having denied Christ three times (hence the rooster on the column). Apparently, the piece shows a common iconography in a group of Castilian devotional plaques made since the end of the 16th century and throughout the 17th century, based on a chalcographic print (simplified and inverted) by Lèonard Gaultier (ca. 1561 - ca. 1635), and which was published by Jean Leclerc (1560 - ca. 1622). A similar piece to the present one is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia. Weight: 152 grams.
