The painting shows a view of one of the gates of the city of Aguilar de Campoo (Palencia), specifically the one called the Reinosa or Burgos Gate. María Reneses, better known for her watercolors, trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid, where she won awards. She founded the Spanish Watercolorists Association (AEDA) and served on its Board of Directors. She participated in National Exhibitions, Biennials, and various National Competitions organized by the AEDA and other institutions, and was a regular at the Autumn Salons, exhibiting in 1949, 1952-1965, 1967-1971, 1973, 1977-1981, 1976, and 1983-1989. She won the Third Prize for Watercolor at the 1956 Autumn Salon, the First Prize in 1964, and other awards. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions in Madrid, Barcelona, and at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. For over twenty years, she sponsored a prize bearing her name at the Autumn Salons, a prize specifically designed for young watercolorists.
