Cameo with gold setting (9 kts); brooch. Victorian era, around 1860. Cameo with openwork die-cut gold mount (9 kts) decorated with a symmetrical composition based on opposing “ces”, simplified volutes and aventurated shapes in the equator of the piece (on both sides). The cameo itself, made in Cassius Cypraea (and therefore of the type known in the 19th century as a “coral”), presents a scene from classical mythology: on the left appears the Aurora, accompanied by a winged child with a torch (Phosphor , the morning star) and preceding the chariot of the Sun with four horses, which appears surrounded by the Hours and is driven by Apollo. Note the compositional and iconographic similarity between the scene and the fresco painted by Guido Reni between 1613 and 1614 in the Casino dell'Aurora Pallavicini (Rome, Italy), entitled “L'Aurora”, which, in addition, was often used as inspiration for works in different media throughout the 19th century. Friar armchair. Wood, leather. Spain, 16th and 18th centuries. Armchair with arms and high back of the type known as “frailero”, which has studded leather on the seat and upper part of the back, low cut-out low profile chambrances joining the front legs with the rear legs and middle chambrances or stringers (the front one is carved with a relief of architectural motifs) joining the two front legs and the two rear ones, and simple armrests. In the present case, it is necessary to indicate that the chambrana, due to the relief, would be from the 18th century. The friar armchair, initially of Italian origin, became one of the most common pieces of Spanish furniture since its introduction in the 16th century, being characteristic of this and the 17th century and being recovered again in the historicist current of the 19th century. Being a tradition so deeply rooted in Spain, these types of models have never stopped being created.

Backgammon players, inspired by David Teniers The Younger. Framed ivory miniature (gilt bronze, metal, glass, textile); signed (Dupre). XIX century. Miniature that shows an interior with a series of characters of humble social class. In the center of the composition, the backgammon players are located, accompanied by various objects and other characters. In the lower right corner, a signature (“Dupre” appears; perhaps Léon-Victor Dupré, French artist who was born in Limoges in 1816 and died in Paris in 1879, known for his landscapes and a disciple of his brother Jules Dupré, was part of the Barbizon School). The frame, made of gilded bronze, presents a classically influenced banded decoration on its front, an openwork bow finish on the upper part, and pieces on the back that allow it to be placed on a flat surface or hung. Compare the painting attributed to David Teniers the Younger in the National Gallery, London, titled Backgammon Players, probably made between 1640 and 1645; and, above all, with that of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, attributed to the same master and dated between 1635 and 1637, also titled Backgammon Players.
